The Timeless Elegance of Pashmina: India's Finest Fibre

The Khadeejah of Kashmir

What Makes Pashmina Truly Precious

Pashmina is not merely a fabric — it is a centuries-old story of altitude, craft, and patience. Sourced from the fine underbelly fleece of the Changthangi goat, which grazes at elevations above 14,000 feet in the Ladakh region, Pashmina fibres are among the finest natural fibres in the world, measuring just 12–16 microns in diameter.

From Goat to Garment

Each Changthangi goat yields only about 80–170 grams of raw Pashmina per year, making the raw material inherently scarce. The fleece is hand-combed — never sheared — during the spring moulting season, then carried down to the valley where generations of Kashmiri craftswomen spend hours separating, cleaning, and spinning the fibre by hand on a traditional wooden spinning wheel called a yinder.

A single Pashmina shawl can take weeks to weave on a handloom, with the finest pieces — featuring intricate Kani or Sozni embroidery — requiring months of skilled labour from multiple artisans.

Kani Weaving and Sozni Embroidery

Two decorative traditions elevate Pashmina to wearable art:

  • Kani weaving interlocks coloured threads using small wooden bobbins called kanis, producing tapestry-like patterns within the very structure of the fabric. No embroidery needle ever touches the cloth — every motif is woven in.
  • Sozni embroidery uses the finest needles to stitch delicate floral and paisley motifs onto a plain or twill-woven Pashmina base, a craft that apprentices study for up to seven years before mastering.

Caring for Your Pashmina

A genuine Pashmina, well cared for, can last a lifetime. Hand-wash in cool water with a mild, pH-neutral shampoo. Never wring or tumble dry — instead, press gently in a towel and lay flat to dry in the shade. Store folded (never hung) in a breathable cotton bag with a cedar block to deter moths.

How to Identify Authentic Pashmina

Genuine Pashmina feels impossibly light and warm simultaneously. The simplest test: hold a corner to a light source — authentic Pashmina glows with a soft luminosity that synthetic blends cannot replicate. Look for the GI (Geographical Indication) tag, which certifies the piece was crafted in Kashmir from genuine Changthangi fleece.
